José Chinchay Campos operates in the Tabaconas district, within the province of San Ignacio. He manages two farms, La Chirimoya (1900 masl) and La Peña (1910 masl), cultivating 1.5 hectares of coffee with Catimor, Bourbon, Caturra, and Amarillo varieties. Benefiting from favourable climate conditions, soil quality, and diverse forest ecosystems, José creates an ideal environment for producing specialty coffee on his farms.
In 2023, Jose joined the Cedros Cooperative, and is actively participating in the ‘Cafe Selva Note’ sustainability project. Launched in 2019, Cafe Selva Norte focuses on transitioning the coffee value chain to a more sustainable model, benefiting producers and stakeholders. It collaborates with six cooperatives in Northern Peru, supporting various activities, including sustainable land use transition, organic fertilisation, post-harvest training, and improvements to supply chain infrastructure.
Since its beginning, Cafe Selva Norte has lent 627,000 USD to eight cooperatives, enabling the renovation of 258 hectares into agroforestry systems. The project has established five nurseries, producing 61,742 shade trees and 886,575 coffee trees. Over the next 14 years, the project aims to finance 3,000 producers, convert 8,250 hectares into agroforestry systems, conserve 200,000 hectares of forest, and sequester/avoid 3.8 million tonnes of CO2.
